Sugababes Biography
Before ever girl bands really became a popular phenomenon the Sugababes, made up of Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy were bubbling under the surface of huge stardom at the tender age of 16. Mutya was interested in singing at the age of 11 when she met her manager who organised demos and recordings with some record companies and soon afterwards she became one of the founding members of the Sugababes.
They were and continue to be a vocal group who are in touch with the music listened to by other teenagers in clubs, cafes and at home. The music was a blend of pop, garage, soul, r'n b with just a hint of Indie for good measure.
Compared to other girl bands in the 90s the Sugababes always had a raw edginess and seemed to be much more serious, some would say sullen, in their stage appearances. There were no false stage school smiles and playing to camera - just a sense of commitment to the music which seemed to give the girls more credibility than their peers.
In November 2000 the album One Touch was released and
received rave reviews, by Christmas it had been certified silver, going gold early the following year having sold over 200,000 copies.
Their first single, Overload, took the charts by storm with its original sound but only made it to number 6. It was later nominated for Best British Single at the Brit Awards 2001. This was very impressive considering the girls were just 16, had only been in the public eye for a year and were up against contenders such as Craig David and Robbie Williams. There then followed lots of public appearances on Top Of The Pops, in live concerts and at awards ceremonies.

In the summer of 2001 Siobhan Donaghy left to pursue a solo career and by the autumn Heidi Range had been installed as her replacement. Auditions were organised whereby the contenders were not told which band they were auditioning for and even in the later stages when Keisha and Mutya were present they would converse in their own code to maintain secrecy. Heidi, from Liverpool, had in fact been one of the very original members of Atomic Kitten before they hit the big time. Her solid vocal style came as a surprise to some who thought that because of her prettiness she couldn't possibly have a good voice as well.
Subsequent to the Atomic Kitten experience Heidi went solo before being spotted by the Sugababes, who represented a more r'n b style, singing original material which Heidi was more interested in.
The girls signed to a new label, Universal in autumn 2001, hoping to lead to more creative input from the band members.
By August 2002 the album Angels With Dirty Faces was released which included the highly acclaimed singles Freak Like Me, Round Round and Shape Of My Heart.
The latest single Hole In The Head has seen a fleeting appearance at number 1 in the charts just one week after its release on 13th October 2003.
It's taken from the album Three which features ballads, retro samples with new Sugababes arrangements over the top as well as quality pop tunes.
It's perhaps this blend of various styles and influences which keeps the girls' music fresh and appealing for a wide audience and hopefully this will be enough to guarantee their future success.
